Behind Closed Doors
The Genealogy department of the Medical research facility were experimenting with Genetic Modification to help fight against diseases such as cancer, diabetes and Alzheimer's. All in all - good intentions. No animals or humans would be put at risk - until the drugs they were using made it to the human trial stage, but that would be carefully monitored.
They, however, failed to notice one specific branch of research, but, since that Head of department was one of the best scientists in what the was still Great Britain at the time and was well renounced for his talented abilities, they didn't feel the need to keep an eye on him. They made the mistake of trusting him too much.
He convinced the whole department to join him in his unethical experiments. Those who refused were fired and never seen again. They began using embryos, both human and animal, to create new species. Favouring the combination of human DNA mixed with that of canines, they proceeded from there. When the government found out about these they claimed research would help create better soldiers and spies – stronger, faster, enhanced stamina, longer memory and no fear.
Of course the way these experiments were conducted were terrible – showing images of friends being tortured, unnecessary operations – some too horrible to understand, but most of these memories were erased so if presented the poor creatures wouldn’t be able to say anything about it. No one questioned what went on there – when a world has wars going on in just about every country people need all the help they can get.
Each generation of hybrids they made were better than the last. Finding that a 50:50 ratio is the best, they kept the research going, creating and improving more of human-dogs, just like the original plan. Then, 50 years and 8 Directors later, there came the perfect specimen. Hundreds came and went before him, but the sacrifice was deemed necessary.
They taught them as little about the 'outside world' as possible but enough so that, if needed, they could be passed off as normal human beings but weren't tempted to run. They thought the underground facility they used as a lab, now separate from the original medical research building, was Houdini proof - no one except the scientists could get in or out. But they didn't expect the fire to start, for it to spread, for everyone to run outside whilst it was being dealt with, for that 'perfect' one, their most dangerous weapon, to disappear...
